Gov. Esmael Mangudadatu to May Andal Ampatuan Sr. rest in peace.

"May Andal Ampatuan Sr. rest in peace."

This was the message of Maguindanao Gov. Esmael Mangudadatu, rival of Ampatuan, on Saturday after the latter's death Friday.

Mangudadatu, however, said his family as well as the kin of other victims of the Maguindanao massacre will continue to seek justice.

"Regardless of his death however, the Mangudadatu family and other families of the victims of the Ampatuan Maguindanao Massacre case will continue to seek justice for the 58 persons who were gruesomely killed during the said incident," he said.

Andal Sr., patriarch of the Ampatuan clan of Maguindanao and one of the principal accused in the deaths of the 2009 massacre, died Friday night.

He passed away after being comatose since Monday following a heart attack. He also suffered from advanced liver cancer.

The Maguindanao massacre is said to be the worst case of election-related violence in Philippine history.

Mangudadatu's wife and his sister were then headed to the Commission on Elections office in Shariff Aguak to formalize his candidacy for governor. They were accompanied by journalists, lawyers and relatives when they were stopped by armed men and killed.

Andal Sr., sons Andal "Unsay" Ampatuan Jr. and Zaldy, and more than 100 others have since been charged with murder in connection with the massacre.
